A Chardonnay from Auvergne that earns its name. Vibrant and tightly wound, it opens on orange blossom, citrus and juicy pear before landing on a chalky, saline finish. Tension and generosity in the same glass...
Nuit Blanche comes from Francine and François Dhumes' plot in Chidrac, a lieu-dit sitting on limestone-clay soils a short drive from their cellar in Orcet. The vines are trained in Guyot and kept at very low yields. Two components make up the 2023. The Chardonnay goes through direct pressing, while a portion of Chardonnay muscat undergoes a brief eight-day skin contact, adding aromatic lift and texture to the blend. Both are then aged for a year on the lees in old barrels with no additions, no fining, no filtering.
The nose is expressive, with orange blossom, candied citrus, juicy pear and lemon thyme. The palate combines energy, volume and freshness, with a chalky finish that lingers. Still a young wine in 2023, it rewards patience. A few months in bottle will bring further complexity and integration. This is a wine squarely aimed at insiders who appreciate restraint, minerality and the kind of slow-building pleasure that only comes from a winemaker willing to trust time over technique.
François Dhumes may be more discreet than some of his neighbours and winegrower friends, but his quiet strength makes the Auvergne shine in the firmament of French and European wine regions. Based in the small village of Orcet, with the help of his wife Francine, he crafts Gamay wines of a rare finesse, true juices with the scent of volcanoes...
