Koppitsch

Maria & Alexander

What a great place to live on the banks of the Neusidler See, just an hour south of Vienna. This is where Maria and Alexander Koppitsch have been making their fresh, lively and touching wines since 2011, highlighting the very special terroirs of this region straddling Austria and Hungary...

400 years of history

For almost 400 years, the name Koppitsch has been associated with this region at the crossroads of history, wandering between Austria and Hungary over the centuries. The family has also been growing vines for 400 years, and according to the last generation, no chemicals or additives have ever been used!

Maria, Alexander and their three children have since moved back to the shores of Lake Neusiedl, south of Vienna, in 2011. There they took over the family vineyard, of about 5.5 hectares in production and stopped the bulk business to start bottling, for the first time in the family.

Native varieties are in the spotlight, Welschriesling or Grüner Veltliner for the whites, Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch or St-Laurent for the reds... After having made varietal wines since their beginnings, the Koppitschs are reversing the trend and deciding to focus on the types of soils, while blending different grape varieties. This is the birth of their new line, with the 2017 vintage. "Homok", for example, means "sand" in Hungarian and brings together the different plots planted on sandy soils.

A more fun line gathering a white, a rosé, a red and a natural sparkling wine, and then a sharper line, coming from the vineyards on limestone soils, and where the wines are worked on longer maturation, for a more complex and deep result.

All of the wines in their range are, in any case, a skilful blend of a deep, expressive nose and a light, refreshing palate. Take a stroll along the shores of Lake Neusiedl, through the seasons, thanks to the magnificent work of Alexander and Maria...

Koppitsch - the complete range

Toes in the water

The labels of the entire Koppitsch range are reminiscent of Lake Neusiedl and a certain holiday feeling, as the lake, surrounded by reeds and calm, undeniably invites relaxation.

The names of the vintages recall the Hungarian history of the region, and allude to the different soils of the vineyards, HOMOK for example, "sand" in Hungarian, or RET, "meadow". Each colourful label tells its own little story, just like the wines produced by Alex and Maria.
