Tom Gauditiabois joined the family estate of around 7 hectares near Chézy-sur-Marne in the late 2010s after studying in Avize and completing an apprenticeship with Jacques Selosse. He began making wine in earnest with the 2016 harvest, starting with a small volume, which marked the beginning of a personal project seeking to promote his native terroir.
The vineyard is mainly planted with Meunier grapes and is located in the western Marne Valley on well-suited soils around Chézy-sur-Marne. The work in the vineyard favours a natural approach, with minimal intervention, promoting the expression of the soil and the purity of the grapes. Each harvest is carefully selected so that the grapes reflect the character of the vintage and the terroir before being transformed into wine.
In the cellar, Tom Gauditiabois adopts a gentle and respectful approach to vinification, using indigenous yeasts, natural fermentation, little or no added sulphur, and often ageing in 400 or 600 litre barrels to preserve the substance without altering it. Each cuvée is designed to be a ‘snapshot’ of the vintage and the plot, without seeking to standardise the style, resulting in lively, frank champagnes, often with low or even zero dosage, and great authenticity.
The first cuvées, produced in very small volumes, demonstrate great freedom of style and an exploratory approach. The entire project reflects a return to basics, a focus on living things and a quest for truth in wine, faithful to the terroir of the Marne Valley.
Since the beginning of his project, Tom Gauditiabois has chosen ‘Exploration’ as the guiding principle for his vintages, a simple but meaningful word that reflects his desire to test, observe and understand the Chézy-sur-Marne vineyard in all its facets. His first ‘Exploration’ wines were micro-vintages, sometimes only a few hundred bottles, vinified from pure Meunier or various blends, designed as experiments that differed each year, each wine a unique snapshot of the vintage and terroir.
The name evokes not only the work in the vineyard and the cellar, but also curiosity about the soils, grape varieties and vinification periods. Each Exploration cuvée tends to express a variation, an experiment, a possible nuance, which makes tasting it as exciting as a discovery...
