A centuries-old tradition

The vineyard has deep roots in history, with traces of wine-making activity under the name Coutelas dating back to 1675. By 1927, a certain Pierre Coutelas was already producing sparkling wines. Later, his daughter Claudine Coutelas and her husband Jacques Marx consolidated the family lands to create the current brand, giving new impetus to the business. Today, the estate is run by their descendants, Patrick Marx and his son Bryan, with a winemaking heritage passed down from generation to generation, combining history and renewal.

The vineyard covers approximately 5.5 hectares spread over numerous plots around Venteuil. The soils rest on a deep limestone plateau with a top layer of sand and clay, south-facing exposure, geological elements that give the grapes beautiful maturity, saline minerality and great aromatic elegance. The three Champagne grape varieties, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, are cultivated using sustainable practices that aim to preserve biodiversity, soil health and the balance of the vines.

In the cellar, the winemaking process combines respect for tradition with modern rigour. Pressing is sometimes done using an old wooden press, while fermentation can take place in stainless steel vats or barrels in order to control the temperature and preserve the aromatic potential. The estate's champagnes benefit from careful ageing, generally longer than average, with a reduced dosage guaranteeing freshness, fruitiness and finesse. The result is a range of balanced, fresh and digestible champagnes that are both refined and accessible, capable of expressing the minerality of the soil and the maturity of the grapes, while remaining true to the spirit of the Marne Valley terroir.
