The parcel takes its name from its proximity to an ancient pilgrimage route, leading to Vézelay on the way to Compostelle.

It sits on a west-facing dome. Its gentle slope is exposed to a permanent breeze and is composed of Kimmeridgian limestone scree and decomposed soils that release crystals and minerals.
