Les Aussigouins is the flagship white of Mai & Kenji Hodgson, a cuvée that expresses the depth and purity of 100% Chenin Blanc from old vines grown on volcanic-schist soils in the Rablay-sur-Layon area, neighbour to the famed Montbenault parcels. The schist and sandstone influence gives the wine its striking mineral backbone, dense yet electric, with both salinity and pronounced tension that reflect the terroir’s dynamic drainage and complexity.
For the 2023 vintage the grapes from the Les Aussigouins parcel were carefully harvested and sorted in a challenging season, then fermented primarily in large foudre with a portion aged in small barrels to add texture and depth. Extended maturation in tanks before bottling allowed seamless integration of flavours and structure, resulting in a wine that balances precision and power, an elegant yet intense expression of Chenin and its volcanic roots.
Of Canadian and Japanese origins, it was a desire to discover the Loire and winegrowing beyond their borders that pushed Mai and Kenji to France in 2009, at Mark Angeli's. A few years later they set up their own small estate in Rablay-sur-Layon and it is quickly well beyond their new borders that their work is recognised...
