The most joyful wine in the Gut Oggau family. Winifred is a luminous, pure-fruited rosé built entirely around pleasure, with red currant, pomegranate, lime and a mineral snap that keeps it honest. The kind of bottle you open without ceremony and finish without regret...
In the fictional Gut Oggau family, Winifred sits among the children's generation alongside Theodora and Atanasius. She is the daughter of Timotheus from his first marriage, described by Eduard and Stephanie as a winning, sociable and cheerful young lady who takes everyone's heart by storm. The wine lives up to the description every vintage.
What makes Winifred particularly worth talking about is how she is made. Unlike most rosé wines, which are a byproduct of red wine production, the vineyard used for Winifred is dedicated entirely to producing this rosé. The grapes are specifically grown for it, not pressed off as saignée from a red wine fermentation. That decision matters enormously and shows in the glass. This is not an afterthought or a commercial concession. It is a wine made with the same intentionality as every other bottle at Gut Oggau.
In 2021, Winifred is sourced from sand and clay soils off 35-year-old vines. Maceration lasted only a few hours in old wood, followed by spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and eight months of élevage in used barrels. The result is a luminous pink rosé, unfined, unfiltered and with no added sulphur. In the glass it is light and expressive, showing notes of red currant, pomegranate and lime, with subtle herbal touches and a clean mineral finish. Lively, youthful and easy to enjoy, yet carrying depth from its careful winemaking. At 12% alcohol it is the lightest and most immediately accessible wine in the current Gut Oggau range. The ideal entry point into the family, and the easiest bottle to love at first sip.
The name Oggau probably sounds familiar to many of you, and if this small village on the shores of Lake Neusiedl in Austria can boast such popularity, it is thanks to Eduard Tscheppe and Stephanie Tscheppe-Eselböck, the couple behind Gut Oggau, one of the most popular and forward-thinking estates in the region...
