Wild berries and a touch of gentle earthiness fill the glass, backed by soft, easy tannins and a lively, thirst-quenching finish. Medium-bodied and endlessly drinkable, this is a red built for the everyday, poured generously and refilled without a second thought. True to its name, Freghino is the estate's playful, no-fuss classic...
Freghino comes from Agri Segretum, the organic estate that Lorenzo De Monaco and Eileen Holland built in Collazzone, in Umbria's Tiber River Valley. The name is Umbrian dialect for teenager, and true to that spirit, this is the estate's most carefree, easy-drinking red, now offered in a generous one-litre format built for sharing and everyday pouring.
The blend leans on Sangiovese, rounded out with Malvasia Nera and Colorino, all hand-picked at mid-harvest from vines grown on limestone and clay soils at 300 metres altitude. The grapes undergo spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel, with around nine days of skin contact before the wine continues ageing in steel, entirely without wood, for around nine months before release. This lighter touch keeps Freghino true to its Sangiovese roots while staying fresh, direct and uncomplicated.
The result is a medium-bodied red full of wild berry fruit and a subtle earthy undertone, with soft tannins that make it dangerously easy to drink. It is built for weeknight pasta, pizza, grilled vegetables or simply a glass on its own, the kind of bottle that disappears quickly and gets refilled without hesitation. At 13% alcohol, dry and unpretentious, Freghino is exactly what its name promises, an easygoing, everyday companion straight from the heart of Umbria.
